Today is a Solemnity of the Church - the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It is a devotion which emerged in the Church first as devotion to the Sacred Wounds of Christ. Under St Gertrude the Great (in medieval times) it developed through her mystical locutions, but was then largely neglected by the church. It took another mystic and saint, St Margaret Mary, to bring the devotion back to the church's life.
