Today is the Feast of St Mark the Evangelist. St Mark is mentioned by St Peter, as his beloved son. It is the tradition of the church that St Mark derived much of his gospel from St Peter.
In the gospel we hear the final words of St Mark's gospel, which is the account of the Ascension of Christ, and just before this, our Lord gives the Great Commission. This was the commission to proclaim the gospel and to baptise, this was the commission to establish the Church. By the Church all may come to salvation through hearing the preaching of the Church and responding in faith, and then through receiving the means of grace come to the Kingdom of Heaven.
