Making a perfect act of contrition
In the absence of the Sacrament of Confession, is there anything we can do to obtain the forgiveness ordinarily granted in the sacrament? Can mortal sins be forgiven before an absolution in the confessional?
The answer is 'yes'. The answer is to make a perfect act of contrition.
When we hear that, especially the word 'perfect', we might understandably think I cannot do something perfectly! But that is not the meaning of this act.
This is not something that has just been made up. It is a real thing taught by the church for centuries and it is distinctly possible for us all to fulfil the requirements to obtain forgiveness. For a very clear and good explanation I refer you to Fr Dylan's podcast below. Fr Dylan taught me moral theology and I personally think is an excellent teacher.
