Homily of Easter Octave Sunday

Mass of the Octave Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy)

Today is the 8th day of Eastertide and the end of the Octave of Easter. Each day of the Octave is like Easter Day itself. Each day is a solemnity. Today is the last day of that special Easter period. Tomorrow we begin a more 'ordinary' period of Eastertide.

We hear in the gospel Christ conferring the authority to forgive sins upon the 11 Apostles. It is the beginning of the Sacrament of Penance (or 'Confession'). It is based in the Divine Mercy. Christ came to overcome the reign of sin and death. He has conquered death and in Him there is the forgiveness of sins, but also the gift of New Life.
