Deo gratias

Thanks be to God. I celebrate today the anniversary of the conferral of priestly orders upon me together with my ordinariate brothers. It occurred nine years ago at Plymouth Cathedral. Bishop Christopher agreed to ordain me under the authority of my Ordinary in the Ordinariate. I would be grateful if you offered me a prayer: that I may grow in true holiness and thus be a better priest.

Today's gospel is the one we usually also hear on Ash Wednesday and reminds us of the three types of penance we can perform: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. These three acts refer to three broad aspects of our lives: our body, our relationship to God and our relationship to our neighbour. Penance is an act directed to our conversion. Our Lord teaches us today that we must avoid vanity and perform penance in secret.
