Today is the Solemnity of the birth of one of the great saints of the Church, but alas one that is often neglected. Could it be that St John the Baptist is too uncomfortable a figure for us? Well whatever we think, Holy Scripture is clear about his great significance for the account of his annunciation and birth is woven together with the annunciation and birth of our Saviour.
